Celebrate Creation: Plant, Till, Walk, Play, Drum,
Sing, Pray
We are offering three daylong programs this spring
based on the theme of stewardship. The programs
begin at 9:30, include a continental breakfast,
lunch and closing service of thanksgiving in beautiful
St. Luke’s Chapel overlooking the Sound. In addition,
the challenge course and climbing wall will be
offered in the afternoon to provide people of
all ages the opportunity to participate in some
exceptional team building activities and initiatives
from ground level all the way up to 30 feet.
Ecology activities will be led by our naturalist,
Jeff Gottlieb, MS in Biology. Named “Outdoor Educator
of 2007” by the New York Outdoor Education Association,
Jeff recently published a fascinating book: “Wigwam:
Building the Traditional Northeastern Domed Shelter.”
He has been teaching primitive technology to children
and adults in special seminars and school programs
throughout the US for over 25 years.
March 30 - Gardening: Working with the soil to
enlarge our gardens, build and raise beds and
plant early vegetables. Learn about glacial ecology,
seashore ecology, and soil. Take an interpretive
nature walk to see woodlands, wetlands, and beach.
Games and sports.
April 27 - Planting: Flowers, trees, and shrubs
throughout the camp: black cherry, red maple,
beach plum, eastern red cedar and other native
species provided by a special New York State DEC
program. Native American history program, featuring
the camp’s wigwam and fire building without matches
(friction method)! Learn about the close relationship
that the first people of Long Island shared with
the land and the sea.
May 10 - More planting: we will continue our planting
program from April, including erosion control
at the challenge course and along the bluff. Learn
about ecology. Celebrate our good efforts and
the gifts of springtime in a drumming circle on
the camp’s handmade djembes, ashikos, and other
instruments!
